IDEALISED GRANULAR MATERIALS

THE PAPER IS CONCERNED WITH THE STATICS AND KINEMATICS OF MOHR-COULOMB MATERIAL, I.E., MATERIAL WHICH YIELDS BY SLIDING ON PLANES, EITHER SINGLY OR IN PAIRS, THE SLIDING IN ANY PLANE BEING GOVERNED BY THE FRICTION ANGLE AND DILATANCY ANGLE FOR THE PLANE. THE ISOTROPIC CASE, IN WHICH FRICTION AND DILATANCY ANGLES ARE CONSTANT ON ALL PLANES THROUGH A POINT, IS DEALT WITH, TOGETHER WITH PROBLEMS IN TWO SPACE DIMENSIONS. IT IS SHOWN THAT MOHR-COULOMB MATERIAL OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING CONSISTENT, THEORETICAL SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS INVOLVING KINEMATICALLY SPECIFIED BOUNDARY CONDITIONS AND THAT IT APPEARS TO BE UNIQUE AT PRESENT AMONG THE AVAILABLE MODELS OF DILATING FRICTIONAL MATERIAL.
