TRULY TRIAXIAL STRESS-STRAIN BEHAVIOUR OF KAOLIN

TWO STRESS-STRAIN MODELS ARE CONSIDERED - THE CAM-CLAY MODEL IN ITS ORIGINAL SIMPLE FORM, AND THE MICROSTRUCTURAL MODEL. EXPERIMENTAL DATA FROM TESTS ON CUBOIDAL SAMPLES OF REMOLDER KAOLIN IN THE TRUE TRIAXIAL APPARATUS ARE PRESENTED. THE SAMPLES WERE SUBJECTED TO LARGE DEFORMATIONS, INDEPENDENTLY IN THE THREE DIRECTIONS PERPENDICULAR TO THE FACES OF THE CUBOID. NORMAL AND SHEAR STRESSES ACTING ON THE SAMPLES WERE MEASURED USING LOAD CELLS OF VARIOUS TYPE IN CONTACT WITH THE SAMPLES. IN SOME OF THE TESTS A SMALL COMPUTER WAS LINKED UP TO THE TRIAXIAL APPARATUS TO FORM A CLOSED LOOP CONTROL SYSTEM AND IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ACCURATELY APPLY AN INFINITE RANGE OF TEST PATHS IN PRINCIPAL STRESS OR PRINCIPAL STRAIN SPACE.
