DEFECTS IN CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR AGGREGATES

NEKOTORYE NEDOSTATKI DEJSTVUYUSHCHIKH STANDARTOV NA KAMENNYE MATERIALY

To characterize the strength of crushed aggregates, Specification Gost 8267-64 recommends a compression test in a cylinder. The petrographic nature of the aggregate tested must be known: two aggregates taken from rocks varying in nature and strength can give the same result. in the above norm, incoherences are found relating to the classification of aggregates according to quality compared to results obtained from visual observation (Ex: Kazahstan limestone with a folded structure). It would be preferable to clarify aggregate by a wearing test carried out in a drum or a compression test conducted on the original rock in a state of saturation. Further more, laboratory conditions for the manufacture of aggregates are often very different from conditions found in industrial surroundings, and this can lead to errors in interpretation. Lastly, there exist some differences between specifications for aggregates and other specifications for concrete used for road construction and hydrotechnical structures. A revision of the specifications is recommended.
