As the French do: Improving the durability of asphalt pavement mix designs

Asphalt pavement deterioration and eventual failure can largely be attributed to durability issues. While advances have been made in aggregate quality and mix design, over the long term, as asphalt mixtures oxidize, they become increasingly brittle and suffer from cracking and raveling. This article takes a look at a new approach being used in Indiana, which increases the design air void content while also increasing the field density. The approach is called Superpave5 and is modeled after the French approach to mix design.
