Part of the process: Checking in on performance of recycled pavements

While it has the potential to be effective for reducing the costs and environmental impacts of pavement rehabilitation and reconstruction, the performance of pavement recycling can be difficult to predict. This is due to the difficulty in quantifying the structural properties of the recycled materials and understanding their failure mechanisms. This is particularly true when comparing to traditional warm or hot mix asphalt mixtures. These issues have been addressed in several research studies conducted by the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) and the University of Maryland (UMD), as summarized in this article.
