URBAN CONSTRUCTION UNDERGROUND

UNTERIRDISCHER STAEDTEBAU

Shortage of space, increased traffic, developments in the market for land and the necessary diversion of transport from the centres of congested areas is leading to an increasing trend towards the construction of roads, parking areas and shopping centres underground. The book deals with the engineering problems involved in urban underground construction. A historical survey of underground working is followed by chapters on subterranean railway construction, road tunnels, underground parking garages, pedestrian tunnels, pipe conduits and service and drainage conduits. Details are given of planning, design, construction and costs. The text is dupplemented by examples and illustrations taken mainly from German Towns.
