A Methodology for Evaluating the Turbocompound Potential for an Automotive Engine
This paper deals with the exhaust energy recovery in internal-combustion engines; it aims to describe existing evaluation methodologies of exhaust energy recovery and to compare their results with a suggested methodology which is developed in this work. The novelty of the suggested methodology is that it shows all the different potentials of energy recovery. It covers both theory and real applications with a comparison of both of these. At the beginning of the paper, the methodologies described in the literature are introduced. Next, different potentials of exhaust energy recovery are calculated. Then, a complete methodology is developed to evaluate the potential of the exhaust energy recovery by turbocompounding. This methodology is described and applied to a 2 l diesel engine through numerical simulations. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the basis of the results.
