HIGH QUALITY PRECAST CONCRETE PILES. REQUIREMENTS, DESIGN, LOADING, INSPECTION AND LOADING

The paper presents information, based on experience in Sweden, about high quality precast concrete piles and covers topics such as requirements of concrete strength, aggregate size, reinforcement and splicing. The effect of driving is discussed with respect to compression and tension shock waves and to cracks in the concrete. Rules are proposed for design with respect to bending and influence of negative skin friction. Installation procedure, inspection and testing methods are discussed, and two case histories presented. General requirements of the structural strength of the pile are also reviewed. A minimum concrete strength of 500kg/cm2 (2700 lb/in2) and aggregate size of 15mm to 25mm is advocated to achieve a good overall strength. It is recommended that allowable load be calculated by p=fmm where m=bending strength and fm could be between 10-15 limiting allowable loading to 50-150 tons.
