Asphalt reinforcement through geosynthetics

Since the late 70’s geosynthetics have appeared within pavement structure increasing road performances. Geotextiles were successfully used as waterproofing barrier in many asphalt layers and seals. Today research and development enable many different geosynthetics to be installed within the asphalt layer, not only for waterproofing, but also for reinforcement such to reduce the asphalt thickness or to improve the traffic loading. Design methods have been developing along the years and allow designers to have a feeling of the benefit of using asphalt reinforcement geosynthetics rather than just past experience. The paper aims to introduce current solutions available, from the research available, design criteria, product choice and installation criteria. Case history will be provided as evidence.
