RIVER TAFF POSES PILING PROBLEMS

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PILING METHODS THAT ARE BEING USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW found500,000 CLARENCE BRIDGE, WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE VICTORIAN BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER TAFF AT CARDIFF.SPECIAL PROBLEMS HAVE ARISEN BECAUSE OF THE HIGH-SPEED FLOW OF THE RIVER(2.14 M/S)AND WIDE TIDAL VARIATIONS WHICH RESULT IN DEEP SCOUR.THE SAND,GRAVEL AND SOFT CLAY AT THE APPROACHES HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY ROCK FILL OVERLYING BALLAST AND LARGE COBBLES;THESE REST ON THE KEUPER MARL 18M BELOW GROUND LEVEL.FLOW IS 908,000L/S AND THE RIVER BOARD HAVE INSISTED ON A 60M MINIMUM GAP(THE PRESENT RIVER COURSE IS 150M WIDE).LARGE DIAMENTER(1830MM) PILES ARE BEING USED TO RESIST THE OVERTURNING MOMENT PRODUCED BY FLOW AND TIDE WHICH IS ESTIMATED TO REACH 37T. THE REINFORCED PILES EXTEND TO 30M IN DEPTH AND HAVE STEEL LINERS EXTENDING 2M INTO THE MARL.INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON THE MAKING OF TWO TEST PILES WHICH CONFIRMED THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS,AND OF THE WORKING PILES THEMSELVES USING THE BENTONITE DISPLACEMENT METHOD.BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE BRIDGE ITSELF CONCLUDES THE ARTICLE.ILLUSTRATIONS INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHS OF A REINFORCEMENT CAGE,THE REMOVEL OF SPOIL BY BUCKET AND THE BENTONITE TANK SET-UP. /TRRL/
