SOIL STRUCTURE AND STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPACTED CLAY

This paper deals with the investigations on the shear strength characteristics of a highly plastic clayey soil due to the change in electrolytic environment at a constant water content and constant density. The influence of the aqueous phase composition and the type of exchangeable ion on the geometry of the clay particle has been studied. This investigation may find practical use in improving the bearing capacity of highly plastic clays and in the reduction of seepage losses through the cores of earth dams and clay blankets without appreciably affecting the shear strength of clays. /Author/
