PAVEMENT STRUCTURES FOR HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED ROADS

STRUCTURES DE CHAUSSEES POUR TRAFIC TRES IMPORTANT.

The author recalls that the catalogue of structure types, which was compiled by the setra and LCPC and became applicable after a circular by the "directeur des routes" (highway director) was published 28th May 1971, deals only with pavements upporting a cumulated total average daily traffic, both ways, over a year less than 1500, and that, above this figure, a special study is necessary. This being the case for most roads in the Paris region, the author comments on the real significance of the traffic parameter, drawing attention to the fact that the catalogue has taken as "traffic parameters" the cumulated total average daily traffic both ways, but that in fact, the important factor in pavement design is the heavy-vehicle traffic. Practical conclusions are drawn regarding possible measures to be taken: elimination from the catalogue of all structures with non-stabilized road bases, overdesigning of roadbases, very high-quality improved subgrades, etc.
