Energy Islands – Hybrid Off-shore Plants

The paper presents the possibility of a multifunctional offshore energy facility. Maximum sustainable utilization of marine resources is one of the answers to the energy challenges as well as the other requirements in the coming period, ie. the needs of the increased population on the planet. The sea surface is now used to produce energy, food, mooring, storage and others. For the protection of the coast and islands, more activities listed switches from the shallows to deeper sea or on floating objects anchored. All these activities are mainly used separately but it is possible to assemble them in one place. This provides better utilization of marine resources while reducing unit costs and expenses. The proposed concept of the energy of the island gives a high degree of integration of these activities, with the possibility of extending to others and some that will come in the future. Energy Island is a hybrid offshore object made up of floating offshore wind farms or photovoltaic power plant, moorings, fish farms, dry docks etc. These parts are surrounded by breakwaters, which are not only the passive protection from the waves but also energy storage system in the reversible power plant. The facility is modular and scalable, with the possibility of a simple upgrade or replacement parts. All parts can be manufactured in Croatia and Croatian shipyards.
