RESEARCH INTO THE MANUFACTURE OF FINE LIGHT WEIGHT AGGREGATES CONTAINING CLAYEY RAW MATERIALS

RECHERCHES SUR L'OBTENTION D'AGREGATS LEGERS FINS A BASE DE MATIERES PREMIERES ARGILEUSES

Research was conducted to determine which raw materials and manufacturing processes could be used to produce expanded clay sand with a view to obtaining a light, compact high-strength concrete. Investigations were carried out on montmorillonitic clay and clay shale. The methods studied here are those used in the preparation of the raw material: granulation, drying, crushing, grinding, and baking techniques. The results obtained show that the two best processes are: (1) crushing of previously ground samples, and (2) crushing of dried raw material. Furthermore the sand obtained from clay shalle has better physico-mechanical characteristics than that obtained from clay.
