The Automotive Sector in Turkey: A Baseline Analysis of Vehicle Fleet Structure, Fuel Consumption and Emissions

This paper looks at the automotive market, including production and sales of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy trucks, in Turkey. Fuel consumption and emission rates are examined and compared with other countries. Overall oil consumption is estimated to be 670,000 barrels per day with transport responsible for half. A business-as-usual scenario is modeled and concludes that carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and oil consumption will double by 2030. The author suggests possible policy measures such as adopting CO₂ vehicle standards, vehicle taxation, and incentives for electric vehicles.
