How Safe Are New Cars Sold in the EU? An Analysis of the Market Penetration of Euro NCAP-rated Cars
The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has helped to drive improvements in the safety of new vehicles in Europe. Its five-star safety rating is based on crash tests that are stricter than those required by EU regulations. For example, a car that meets minimum EU safety requirements would receive a zero-star EURO NCAP rating. This report analyzes the number of Euro NCAP-rated cars sold and what percentage of those cars received the highest safety rating. It also looks at adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assistance systems. Contents include: Country-by-country status report; Brand-by-brand status report; Limitations of the programme; and Making vehicles safer. In addition, an interview with Michiel van Ratingen, the secretary general of Euro NCAP, is included.
