STIM: Smart Train Infrastructure Monitoring

This paper focuses on a rail-based transit infrastructure system called the Smart Train Infrastructure Monitoring (STIM) system. The system collects raw data and records the dynamic response of the train as it travels through the tracks, processes the data to detect deterioration and then passes this information onto maintenance crews. This system uses the Pittsburgh, PA light rail line as an example to provide a low-cost method of identifying and localizing structural changes of rail infrastructure. The STIM system makes condition based monitoring possible for many transportation authorities by helping them ensure safer infrastructure and lower maintenance costs.
