OPENING OF GREAT ST. BERNHARD ROAD TUNNEL

The new road tunnel under the Great St. Bernhard Pass was handed over to traffic on March 19. The tunnel, work on which began early in 1959, has a length of 5.85 km. A system of covered approach roads, 5.5 km long on the northern side and 10.3 km long on the southern side, also forms part of the project which is designed to allow the route to be used all the year round. Previously, the 2,454 m high Great St. Bernhard was closed for several months each year due to snow. The road distance between Martigny in the Rhone valley and Aosta, which form the end points of the Great St. Bernhard road, is now 72 km. /Author/
