ELECTRO-SILICATE INJECTION OF LOESS MATERIAL WITH A HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT

ELECTROSILICATIZAREA LOESSURILORCU UMIDITATE MARE

Numerous applications of silicate injection to loess with a moderate moisture content have shown the effectiveness of this stabilization method in Rumania. In the case of loess with a high moisture content, the results of silicate injection are not so consistently successful. The author interprets results, obtained in the laboratory or in-situ, of tests on the effect of moisture content on silicate injection. An electric current applied simultaneously with the injection can remedy the harmful effects of moisture content as the solution of sodium silicate is despersed by means of electrical osmosis, hence the possibility of increasing the range of penetration of the solution injected. The effectiveness of the electrical treatment depends mainly on the nature of the soil. It is probably that the main factor influencing the effectiveness of the method is the exchangeable calcium content of the loess.
