Evaluation of Fracture Resistance of Asphalt Mixes Containing Recycled Asphalt Pavement Using SCB Test

The present study was undertaken to evaluate fracture resistance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mix asphalt (WMA) containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) using newly developed semi-circular bending (SCB) test. Two different WMA additives, one wax (W) based and one surfactant (S) based were selected in this study. Two HMA mixes: HMA + 0% RAP, HMA + 30% RAP and two WMA mixes: WMA + 30% RAP - W (wax based WMA additive), and WMA+30% RAP - S (surfactant based WMA additive) were designed and tested in the laboratory. The SCB samples of 150 mm diameter and 50 mm height with different notch depths: 20 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm were prepared in the laboratory with target air voids in range of 6.5±0.5%. The samples were tested by applying a monotonic load at a rate of 0.5 mm//min at 35°C. A critical energy release rate (J-integral) or J<sub>c value was calculated from the SCB test. The fracture resistant ranking of the mixes based on J<sub>c value was found to be in the following order: HMA±0% RAP>WMA±30% RAP - S, indicating a better fracture resistance of a mix with RAP. The WMA mix containing surfactant additive showed the lowest value of J<sub>c, showing a poor fracture resistance of this mix compared to other mixes.
