Safety Evaluation of Centerline Plus Shoulder Rumble Strips

This article reports findings of research on the safety impacts of the combined application of centerline and rumble strips on two-lane rural highways in Kentucky, Missouri and Pennsylvania. The strategy was measured by changes in crash frequency. Variance in safety impacts based on traffic volume, frequency of crashes before treatment, vehicle speed, lane width and shoulder width was also measured. The study's results indicate that combining centerline and shoulder rumble strips further reduces run-off road crashes compared to rumble strips alone.
