Two experimental dams were built near Matagami in order to evaluate the construction of earth dams on lacustrine clay, as part of the works carried out in Baie James, dam (1) was built to determine the threshold of failure under the most unfavorable conditions, dam (2) to study the long-term reaction of clay, dam (1) collapsed over a width of 100 ft and along its whole length (580 ft) when it reached a height of 13 ft 2 inches, dam (2) is still being tested. Very accurate measuring apparatus, connected to recorders, have supplied data on the behavior of each part of the structures throughout the experiments. The fitures obtained will be used to calculate the cost of structures and to select theories. /TRRL/
