IDENTIFYING VOLATILE S COMPOUNDS BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY

The indentification is described of volatile sulphur compounds by isothermal gas chromatography which involves the use of Teflon (FEP) columns packed with materials available commercially (Chromosorb T Carbopak B-HT-100, Chromosil 310, Deactigel) and of a flame photometric detector fitted with a sulphur filter. The methods permit detection and identification of trace, (nanogram) amounts of 15 sulphur compounds, namely, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide, carbonyl sulphide, sulphur nexafluoride, methyl mereaptan, ethyl mercaptan, n-propyl mercaptan, n-butyl merceptan, iso-butyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulphide, ethyl methyl sulphide, diethyl sulphide, dimethyl disulphide, and diethyl disulphide. The applications of the method are discussed. Details are given of the materials and methods and of specificity, sensitivity and interference tests. The relative retention times of the fifteen volatile sulphur compounds are tabulated and figures are presented which show gas chromatograms of air containing trace amounts of the 15 compounds.
