PV and Batteries: From a Past of Remote Power to a Future of Saving the Grid

Effective grid penetration depends on successful integration of photovoltaic (PV)-based generation and electric energy storage. Historically, PV generation has represented a small fraction of this country's power generation, and it has been standard practice to disconnect the PV unit from the grid whenever the grid was under stress, in order to avoid islanding effects. This strategy is no longer efficient now that PV-based generation represents a larger portion of total electricity generated. The authors describe challenges associated with combining PV with electric energy storage as well as opportunities that this integration presents.
