An experimental console for interpreting aerial photographs has recently been developed by Calspan Corporation. It extracts information about the surface and conditions below the surface by breaking down the apparent color of an object to wavelength components. The console method of interpreting would be expecially practical for determining the extent of spalling, cracking, pot holes, concentration of oil drippings and for detecting voids and defects in pavement without having to close large sections of the highway or cutting into pavement.
