14 sustainable maintenance ideas

Two divisions of a county public works department - Fleet Management and Roads & Drainage - have found unique ways to lower air and water pollution created by the intersection of two critical infrastructure systems. Sustainable operations and maintenance initiatives have been implemented by Orange County's Public Works Department, headquartered in Orlando, FL. Their efforts to manage runoff, utilize alternative fuel, retrofit equipment to be more environmentally friendly, filter out pollutants from stormwater, and use biological control for vegetation management are presented here. Also discussed are the use of aquifer inflow treatment, porous pavements, cold-in-place recycling, and warm-mix asphalt.
