Rethinking switches to boost reliability

Designed to improve performance and redundancy, while reducing the cost of turnout maintenance, an innovative high-availability switch unit is being tested at Loughborough University in the UK as part of the REPOINT research project. Conventional turnout switches require complex locking and detection systems in order to ensure safe operation, as well as accounting for a high proportion of track maintenance costs. The REPOINT project has been considering ways to rethink switch design, as presented in this article.
