ARCHING IN SOIL DUE TO THE DEFLECTION OF A RIGID HORIZONTAL STRIP

A study is made of the amount of arching developed in an ideal soil of finite depth due to the deflection of a rigid horizontal strip or base when the soil is subjected to high static pressures. Solutions are obtained using the equations of plane strain in the form of an infinite series. Graphs are presented showing the pressure distribution on the base and the amount of arching over the base, and an example is given to demonstrate the use of these plots. /Author/
