THE CALCULATION OF THE CONSOLIDATION RATES OF LAMINATED VARVED, OR LAYERED CLAYS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SAND DRAINS

A general mathematical solution by M.R. Horne to the problem of the consolidation rate of a stratified soil draining to a lateral boundary has been developed to a form suitable for engineering application. Calculated values of the overall coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction vary widely with the structure of the deposit and the size of the sample. The cost of a sand drain installation is inversely proportional to the size of the coefficient of consolidation adopted for design so that detailed guidance is given for the adoption of a design coefficient. /Author/
