Assuming linear stress distribution in the direction of the load eccentricity and uniform distribution in the perpendicular direction a chart is given facilitating the computation of maximum soil pressure and neutral axis for circular footings. Using the ordinates of the obtained linear stress diagram on either side of the center line, two concentric load diagrams may be drawn and coverted to equivalent step load diagrams. Corresponding radial and tangential bending moments can be computed by superimposing the values obtained for single concentric ring and area loads; tables and charts are presented facilitating the computation. Octagonal footings can be treated as circular footings having equal area. Based on analogous assumptions and simplifications the pile loads of footings on piles can be determined and the corresponding bending moments computed. Author is stimulating a more rigorous solution in which the actual asymmetric soil pressures or pile loadings should be taken into account. Now, in reviewer's opinion, the actual stress or load distribution depends on deformation conditions which are not dealt with in the paper. The dependence of the allowable pressure on foundation conditions and on the soil compressibility is not discussed either.
