MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT PATTERNS ON DISTURBED AND UNDISTURBED SOIL CORES

An apparatus was developed for studying miscible displacement processes in soils and applied to a study of the effect of soil pretreatment on ion movement patterns. The difference between breakthrough curves on "undisturbed" cores (taken vertically) and cores packed with air-dried, 2-mm sieved soil at moisture contents near saturation was attributed to vertical pathways established in natural soils. Once the larger pores were drained there was little difference in breakthrough patterns. /S.S.S. AM. PROC./
