Sustainability Considerations for Bridges Guide

The road and highway bridge engineering community has long been considering many aspects of sustainability, such as safety, durability, and aesthetics. However, these efforts are rarely coordinated with the goal of improving sustainability due to the lack of a standard framework or guidance for considering and improving sustainability for bridges. In recent years the sustainability of transportation infrastructure has been given broad attention, as the realization of impacts on the environment and the social and economic wellbeing of neighbouring communities and society at large have become widely recognized. The Sustainability Considerations for Bridges Guide is intended to help transportation agencies and bridge professionals improve the sustainable (i.e., social, economic and environmental) benefits of their projects and communicate those improvements to stakeholders in a consistent and objective manner. It provides broad direction on sustainability considerations specific to bridge planning, design, construction and management. The Guide has been developed on the same framework as the TAC Canadian Guide for Greener Roads and includes sustainability concepts and objectives and it is supported by 22 practices.
