What's Ahead for Car Sharing?: The New Mobility and Its Impact on Vehicle Sales

This report, from the international Boston Consulting Group, considers the potential impact of car sharing on new-car sales. By 2021, 35 million users will use 1.5 billion minutes of driving time each month and generate annual revenues of 4.7 billion Euro. Europe will be the largest revenue-generating region, followed by Asia-Pacific and North America. The authors contend that although car sharing continues to expand, and is disrupting markets and mobility services around the world, it’s not likely to have a great influence on new-car sales. They predict that most drivers will continue to own cars and use car-sharing for only some of their transportation needs. In addition, some portion of lost sales to individuals may be offset by sales to larger car-sharing companies who will buy fleets of vehicles, especially in large urban areas. This report also considers how the industry will change and the authors make recommendations to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for how they can evolve their business model to adapt to these changes. The report is illustrated with colorful infographics to assist readers in understanding the impact of car sharing.
