SELECTION OF CHARACTERISTICS FOR NUMERICAL CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS

A correlation criterion proved satisfactory for selecting highly interdependent pairs or groups of characters at desired levels of classification. Highly similar groups of soils remained together during a systematic successive reduction from 61 to 51, 40, 33, and 22 soil characters. This work indicates that a small group of soil characteristics selected through correlation criterion is equal if not superior to a large number of unselected characters. /SSSA Proc/
