Mitigating the Effects of Variable Speed on Drive-by Infrastructure Monitoring

Today, most vehicle-based infrastructure sensing assumes the speed of the vehicle is the same as it passes over the asset of interest. This paper analyzes the effects of variable speed when monitoring infrastructure from the dynamic response of a passing vehicle. The effects are measured by placing accelerometers on the vehicle. A series of laboratory tests were conducted where a vehicle crosses over a scale model bridge structure with different speeds. The authors quantify the ability of several features to detect changes in the infrastructure, independent of the variable speed. The findings from this study indicate that aligning signals to normalize for speed variability improves the classification of results.
