AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ACCURACY ACHIEVED IN MEASURING THE STATE OF COMPACTION OF CEMENT-BOUND GRANULAR BASE MATERIAL ON SLOUGH BY-PASS

An investigation was made, during the construction of the Slough By-pass, of the effect on the accuracy of the sand-replacement method of variations in the elapsed time between compaction and measurement of density in cement-bound granular base material. In addition, comparisons were made of the results of dry density measurements made on cores cut from the base with those of sand-replacement tests carried out by three separate test teams and also those obtained using a direct-transmission gamma radiation apparatus.
