DEFORMATIONAL RESPONSE OF DIFFERENTLY SHAPED AND SIZED TEST PIECES OF SHALE ROCK

SHALE ROCK SAMPLES OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND SHAPES ARE TESTED SO THAT THE DEFORMATIONAL RESPONSE TO LOAD IS DETERMINED. INTRINSIC AND / OR INDUCED ANISOTROPY ARE FOUND TO BE PREVALENT AT CERTAIN CONFINING PRESSURES. IT IS ALSO FOUND THAT AS THE SHALE SAMPLE BECOMES LARGER, DEFECTS SUCH AS CRACKS, PORES AND INCLUSIONS TEND TO CONTROL THE ANISOTROPIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIAL. /AUTHOR/
