The methods currently used for structural design of asphalt pavements in Japan are detailed. These are particulary relevant to high traffic densities and a high proportion of heavy commercial vehicles, and are based on new relationships for pavement life, deflection, traffic classification, etc., developed by field studies in Japan over the last ten years. The applicability of multi-layer pavement theory, having regard to the use of resilience modulus is also discussed, as well as the allowable tensile strains in asphalt concrete, especially on subgrades of low bearing capacity. Progress of research in construction methods for asphalt is also noted.
