SH-WAVES IN TWO-LAYERED SYSTEMS - THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SIE SURFACE PHASE VELOCITY AND THE FREQUENCY

The phase velocities of horizontally polarized shear waves (SH-waves) at the free surface of a layered structure are dispersive. The measured values of the phase velocity can be compared with those calculated for an idealized layered structure. When a match is obtained, the properties of the actual and hypothetical layered structures are assumed to correspond. A system consisting of two layers each of constant thickness, overlying a medium of large depth, represents a common model of a pavement structure. Mathematical expressions are presented which facilitate the calculations needed in analyzing some structures of this type.
