Tastes in design and expression in signage have changed rapidly through the years. Now the trend is to merge the appearances of the signs and the building into an expressive whole, as much as possible. Ordinance provisions limiting sizes of signs seriously hamper such efforts by sign designers. Nor is limitation on number of signs as simple a solution to the proliferation problem as it would appear to be at first glance. Experience with enforcing the provisions of the present code can be helpful in determing what might be or might not be practical for provisions in a new code.
