Exploration of Geometric Complexity in Urban Road Networks

Transportation systems serve as windows into the complex world of urban systems. By properly characterizing a road network, its encompassing urban system can be better understood. This study offers a geometrical approach towards capturing properties of urban road networks. It offers a robust and efficient methodology towards defining and extracting three indicators: area, line, and point thresholds. The methodology is applied to 50 U.S. urban systems with various characteristics, for which the three thresholds are obtained. Noting the fact that not all cities are created the same, the three thresholds uniquely define and represent their corresponding transportation network, thus their encompassing urban systems. Moreover, the authors show that many of the socio-economic characteristics as well as travel patterns within urban systems are directly correlated with their corresponding area, line, and point thresholds.
