THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DIAL-A-BUS SYSTEM

THIS PAPER REVIEWS SOME WORK ON DEMAND ACTIVATED PUBLIC TRANSPORT. THE GENERAL CHARACTERICSTICS OF A DIAL-A-RIDE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED AND THREE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR IT ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED. AN ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF A DEMONSTRATION IN MANSFIELD, OHIO, WHERE A DIAL-A-BUS SYSTEM REPLACED A WITHDRAWN PUBLIC BUS SERVICE. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON RIDERSHIP, REVENUE, ROUTEING AND SCHEDULING, AND ON THE SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS AND ACCESS TO ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF TRANSPORT OF USERS. A MORE ELABORATE DEMONSTRATION PLANNED TO TAKE PLACE IN ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN IS OUTLINED AND AN ACCOUNT GIVEN OF AN EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED IN EMMEN, HOLLAND. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT DIAL-A-RIDE HAS SUFFICIENT POTENTIAL TO JUSTIFY SERIOUS INVESTIGATION IN THE UK. A DISCUSSION FOLLOWS. THE COVERING ABSTRACT IS IRRD ABSTRACT NO. 208402
