Meeting the Needs of Modern Transportation Researchers by Transforming the Iowa Department of Transportation Library - Early Efforts & Results

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) Library is transforming its collection, services, and outreach practices to better serve researcher and patron needs. A robust digitization effort is improving and broadening access to the Iowa DOT’s research output. In the spirit of technology transfer, this work is also aiding other transportation libraries as they face digitization decisions. The ongoing collection development activities are enabling greater electronic access as well as providing an opportunity to update the physical holdings. Combining the results of the Iowa Highway Research Board TR-670 patron survey with clear collection development strategies drives the modernization of Library technologies and services, as well as outreach planning. Through these initiatives, the Iowa DOT Library is becoming a more effective and efficient tool for Iowa DOT researchers.
