ENGINEERS DISCUSS CONCRETE PILE TESTING

In this report of a seminar on concrete pile testing, the problems which exist in concrete pile testing, the methods by which their solution is being sought, and some of the successes which have been accomplished in solving them were discussed. The two test methods discussed were the maintained load test and the constant rate of penetration test. Six methods detailed for the detection of faults included excavation and inspection, three methods in which a hole is formed in the completed pile (by down-the-hole drilling or by coring) and the side of the hole is observed (by closed circuit television, by Caliper Logging, or by acoustic logging), sonic logging, and casting a prestressing rod or cable in the pile. Discussion also centered on the necessity for testing and cost of testing. There was also a review of equipment and safety.
