A FLOATING POWER PLANT CONCEPT FOR THE WEST COAST

Described is an offshore system for generating electrical power (and/or desalted water) which will circumvent many of the difficulties associated with siting, constructing and operating bulk power generating facilities, with particular emphasis on serving demand centers located near navigable waters and/or sea coasts. Advantages are suggested for a modular system of submersible vessels containing power generating equipments, which can be produced in "shipyards" in shallow draft harbors, and maintained in depot facilities. A particular concept for a submersible is described, based on the FLIP ship principle, where construction and maintenance would be performed in the horizontal attitude and on-station operation would be in the vertical attitude, in a mostly submerged condition.
