EQUILIBRE LIMITE DES TALVS ET BARRAGES DE TERRE

Some of the problems presented by the embankments and earth dams are: estimating the safety of a structure with respect to failure, taking into account the uncertainty of the data and the methods of calculation used. The problem consists in seeking, by the two following groups of methods of calculations, the slip surface that gives the smallest safety factor: the first methods assuming plasticity in an extensive volume, the others assuming that such volume is reduced to a thin area. For this last group of methods, the author considers the case of homogeneous soil, then that of a heterogeneous soil. An appendix is devoted to the study of a dam on foundations of very limited strength, then to the determination of the maximum overloads on the edge of an embankment.
