The type of telemetered automatic data system equipment used at remote sites, repeaters and bare stations is described, and local, state, regional and westwide system plans are outlined. Details are given of the snow pressure pillow or group of pillows which are installed flush with the ground surface. The quality and quantity of hydrometeorological data which is of primary importance in design, installation and operation of an automatic system are reviewed. Problems encountered in the development of the present system are discussed. Networks of manually read snow courses operated or proposed by the soil conservation service are reviewed. A partial listing is provided of federal, state, and private agency-designed and installed telemetered hydormet data system networks.
