FLORIDA DOT TESTS FOUR-DAY WEEK

A successful 4-day, 40 hour work week tested by the Florida DOT with stripping crews is reported. The increased production and reduced costs have prompted the department to expand the program. Reducing the work week by one day saves $100 weekly per five man crew. The total annaul savings is about $41,000. Travel time to and from the job is also reduced, as well as vehicle operating costs. Crews remain on the job two hours longer each day. Production has increased more than 25 percent. Paint miles increased 26.3 percent while the amount of paint used increased 20.5 percent. Crew morale has soared. The shorter work week will not be proposed for office workers or others who must work closely with agencies working a 5-day week.
