The article examines the braking systems of modern commercial vehicles and, in particular, the dual-circuit type in which one circuit remains operational should the other fail. A system said to be unsatisfactory is one in which only half the total number of wheels are braked when one circuit fails. An improved dual-circuit system has been developed by Volvo in which both circuits provide braking effort to both front wheels and one rear wheel. An improved 2-line braking system, which is said to have advantages over the conventional 3-line systems used in the UK for tractor-trailer units, is described in detail. /TRRL/
