USE OF A TRANSIENT TEST METHOD IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE LOCAL VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS OF SHIP STRUCTURES

The use of a rapid frequency sweep technique in the study of local vibration problems in ships is demonstrated and it is shown that, even with an extremely short test time, detailed measurements of the frequency response characteristics of built up structures may be made. A series of tests on the hull of a fast patrol boat is described, measurements having been made on the slipway and in water. The effects of hydrostatic loading on natural frequencies are investigated and the results are used to facilitate examination of the spectra of the dynamic response of the structure in service.
